Growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, Matt graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha with a B.A. in English. Matt continued his legal education at Creighton University's School of Law. After graduating from Creighton in 1994, Matt and his wife Andrea moved their family to Kirksville, Missouri where Matt began his legal career as a public defender. Matt left the public defender's office and ultimately opened his own firm. In March, 2010 Governor Jay Nixon appointed Matt to fill the Adair County Prosecuting Attorney Office. Matt was elected in November of 2010 to his first full term of office and was re-elected again in November of 2014. As both a defense attorney and prosecuting attorney, Matt has supported the efforts of alternative courts, finding them a useful way to make a positive difference in our communities.
When Matt is not in the office, you will often find him in a gymnasium, wrestling room or on a ball field somewhere coaching one or all of his four children. He and his wife enjoy spending time in the outdoors with their children, either running, hiking, fishing or camping. Matt and Andrea enjoy training for half-marathons and other fitness challenges while balancing their familial duties. Matt is also very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he currently serves as his ward's Bishop.
